Man drives into sea near Deepwater Wharf, Butterworth

BUTTERWORTH: A car plunged into the sea near Deepwater Wharf here after the driver lost control of his vehicle at about 6am on Sunday (May 21).

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Asri Shafie said that the car's driver was a man in his 30s, and added that he was able to escape the vehicle uninjured by crawling through a window in his car and was then rescued by the wharf's boat crew.

He said the victim was sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital and did not have any injuries.

"The initial investigation found that the victim was from George Town and was driving to Butterworth when he took the wrong exit into the Deepwater Wharf area.

“He then made his way into the wharf area and made a U-turn, where his car skidded and fell into the sea," he said.

ACP Mohd Asri said the victim didn’t realise there was an embankment on the right side of the road and accidentally drove into the sea.

He added that the car is still in the sea and will be retrieved by the Fire and Rescue Department on Monday (May 22).
