KOTA KINABALU: A man was slapped with a RM10,000 fine by the Sessions Court in the Tawau East coast district after being found guilty of providing false information in his identity card application seven years ago.
Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad delivered the ruling on Salleh Akil, 56, after the latter pleaded guilty to the offence under Regulation 25(1)(b) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007) on Monday (May 22).
According to the charge sheet, the accused had used the birth certificate registration number TWU8239/91 belonging to someone else to apply for an identity card at the National Registration Department office in Kunak.
He was accused of committing the act at 1pm on Aug 21, 2016.
Prosecuting officer Nurul Fariza Abdullah, who appeared for the National Registration Department, had urged the court for a deterrent sentence on the accused.
She said the offence could not be taken lightly as the act had rendered the actual owner of the birth certificate unable to proceed with his identity card application.
She added that the case was also a matter of national security and sovereignty, adding a heavy sentence would serve as a lesson to the public.
The court then handed the RM10,000 fine on the accused, or 20 days in jail in default.
The accused later paid the fine.
