White Paper, GEG Bill to be focus of parliamentary committee on Health

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health White Paper and Tobacco and Smoking Control Bill, or Generational Endgame (GEG) Bill, will be the focus of Parliament’s Special Select Committee on Health, says panel member Young Syefura Othman.

In a tweet on Tuesday (May 23), the Pakatan Harapan Bentong MP said the Health White Paper covers various health management aspects in the country.

“The implementation of the White Paper is seen as a reform (for a) better health system for Malaysia.

“Therefore, special attention needs to be given to ensure that this White Paper achieves its goals,” she said.

Young Syefura is among the eight lawmakers appointed to the committee, chaired by former health minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, which had its first meeting on Monday (May 22).

Other members are Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan (BN-Kuala Pilah), Oscar Ling Chai Yew (PH-Sibu), Onn Abu Bakar (PH-Batu Pahat), P Prabakaran (PH-Batu), Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (PN-Kuala Langat), Datuk Dr Alias Razak (PN-Kuala Nerus), and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (PN-Tanjong Karang).

On April 4, Parliament announced the line-up of MPs who are part of the 10 bipartisan special select committees to serve as checks and balances to the government.

Apart from Health, the other special select committees are: Finance and Economy; Entrepreneurship, Cost of Living and Agriculture; Infrastructure, Transport and Communications; Nation Building, Education and Human Resource Development; Environment, Science and Agriculture; Security; International Relations and International Trade; Human Rights, Elections and Institutional Reforms; and Women, Children and Community Development.
