Chinese national believed to have drowned off Sabah isle

KOTA KINABALU: A Chinese national is believed to have drowned while swimming in Mantanani Island off the state’s Kota Belud district, some 100km from here.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the victim was identified as Shuwen Liang, aged 27.

He said they were alerted of the incident yesterday through the Malaysian Emergency Rescue Services 999 number at 1.13pm.

The victim, he said, was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after being pulled out of the water.

“However, the victim was pronounced dead at the location by a medical officer,” he said in a statement here.

The body was then handed over to the police for the next course of action, he added.

“We have yet to obtain the chronology of events that led to the incident,” he said, adding that the operation ended at 2.15pm.

In a separate incident, a security guard died after the motorcycle he was riding crashed on a road in Sabah’s interior Keningau district.

Idik Sakunil was heading from Kampung Batu Lunguyan to SMK Tulid when the accident occurred at about 7.30pm on Monday.

Keningau OCPD Deputy Supt Nor Rafidah Kasim said the victim had lost control of his motorcycle before it crashed at KM28 Jalan Sook-Tulid.

“The victim suffered serious head injuries and is believed to have died on the spot,” she said.
