Five-year-old girl killed after lorry rams into her in Melaka

MELAKA: A five-year-old girl was rammed by a lorry while playing hide and seek behind a tree with another child at Kampung Paya Mengkuang in Batang Tiga here.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit identified the victim as Nur Qayra Quraisya Muhamad Qayyum, who was killed on the spot due to severe head injuries, in the 5.25pm accident on Thursday (May 25).

He said the 37-year-old lorry driver was coming out from a junction when the victim suddenly emerged from behind the tree and ran towards the vehicle.

ACP Christopher Patit said the driver from Jalan Paya Lebar, Bukit Rambai here claimed he didn't notice the victim emerging from behind the tree.

The girl, he said, was playing at the compound of her relative's house after returning from kindergarten.

He said the driver was asked to undergo a screening to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the time of the accident.

He added the police have opened an investigation paper under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, the victim's father Muhamad Qayyum Ab Azis said his youngest daughter had earlier asked him for money to buy ice-cream.

"I heard a commotion outside the house before I found her lifeless outside my mum's house," said the father of three, who was too distraught when met at his home in Tanjung Minyak here.
