Cops raid online gambling call centre in Cheras

KUALA LUMPUR: An online gambling call centre catering to the Indonesian market was busted by the police in a raid on a condominium unit in Salak Selatan on Thursday (May 25).

A total of 11 suspects were arrested, aged between 20 and 29,” Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Zam Halim Jamaluddin said at a press conference at the district police headquarters here on Saturday (May 27).

All were Indonesian nationals that had entered the country with valid tourist visas.

He added that the investigation showed that the modus operandi of the group involved players exchanging their money for online credits which would then be used to gamble.

“Transactions based on the incoming credits are estimated to be around RM700,000 a month,” he said.

A total of 33 handphones, 12 computer monitors and 6 computers were seized in the raid.

It is known that the group had been active since August 2022 and mainly targeted the Indonesian market.

All suspects have been remanded until May 29.

ACP Zam Halim added that this is a Malaysian operation and added that they would cooperate with their Indonesian counterparts on the matter.

In a related matter, he said that the district police have conducted 253 raids on gambling establishments from the start of the year up to Tuesday (May 23) and added that of that, 249 cases have been charged in court.

“We do not want these elements that can destroy the public to be in Cheras,” he said adding that the high charge rate was proof of their seriousness.
