PETALING JAYA: A cleaning woman experienced several harrowing hours tied up in chains inside a bathroom of a flat – because her employers suspected her of stealing their jewellery.
The couple used a heavy chain to confine the woman inside the bathroom of their flat in Taman Tenaga, Selangor, as they went to search her house for the missing jewellery, according to Indonesian envoy Hermono.
The woman’s screams, however, alerted nearby residents who called the police.
Officers had to break down the door of the flat and cut through the chains used to hold the cleaning lady before freeing her.
The woman was in a weakened state, according to the residents.
A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
The couple, aged between 40 and 50, were arrested when they returned to the flat after they could not find the missing valuables in the victim’s house.
The victim, an Indonesian, has gone missing.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the married couple were detained in connection with the matter on Wednesday and remanded until yesterday.
“We are investigating under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement,” he said.
Hermono, who went to the police station yesterday, claimed that the couple had paid off the victim to settle the matter.
“The woman has also gone missing, probably out of fear,” he said.
The envoy, however, felt the couple should be charged in court.
“I have asked the police to find the victim as her statement is needed to charge the couple who abused her.
“In my opinion, they broke the law by unlawfully breaking into the victim’s house while confining her,” he told The Star.
He said employers should refer to the authorities if their Indonesian employees were caught for misconduct.
