MELAKA: A new attraction known as Klebang Walk at Dataran 1Malaysia here will be significant as both a cultural and leisure experience, says Datuk Lim Ban Hong.

The Klebang assemblyman said the site is close to the beachfront.

"Hence, we will turn it into more of a leisure-concept night market and (it could become the) latest tourism icon for the state," he said when interviewed here on Monday (May 29).

Lim said the site will be developed in stages with the early phases to be completed ahead of Visit Melaka Year 2024.

He said the progress would be monitored to see that the project takes shape in line with the state government and local community's aspirations.

Earlier, Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said the site would be made a focal point for tourism.

He said the redevelopment works will involve the restructuring of traders' sites in the area.

Shadan said efforts will be made to improve the lighting and road system as well as reposition food truck lots.

"The area around Dataran 1Malaysia is not only the focus of visitors but also food truck operators in addition to food and drink stalls," he said.

Shadan also expressed his disappointment with the lackadaisical attitude of traders and hawkers who disregarded cleanliness at the site.

He said such an attitude would only cause the site to lose its attraction in the long run.

He added that MBMB would implement stringent conditions on the business community at the site after the facelift is completed to ensure its conduciveness and allure are maintained.
