PUTRAJAYA: Workplaces should be equipped with higher definition closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to help provide evidence in cases of sexual harassment at work, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
This would help the victims prove such offences during legal proceedings, said the Deputy Prime Minister.
Ahmad Zahid, who attended the Anti-Sexual Harassment Advocacy Programme Roadshow launch here yesterday, said the proposal was to ensure the safety of female employees at the workplace.
He also spoke on the need for preventive measures against sexual harassment at public facilities including workplaces.
“This could include the creation of a special committee at the workplace, improving the code of practice and code of ethics at the workplace, the implementation of sexual harassment prevention courses, and improving building infrastructure such as CCTV, lighting and others that are deemed appropriate to the safety of workers, especially women,” he said.
He also said the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act would be able to address gender-based discrimination, especially pertaining to sexual harassment.
“The Act will serve as an alternative platform that provides a remedy to anyone affected by sexual harassment through the setting up of a tribunal,” he said.
On the tribunal, Women, Family and Community Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said her ministry was working towards ensuring its establishment before the end of the year.
For now, she said the ministry was in the process of determining the location to place the tribunal while also finalising its members.
“We have already received the allocation (for the tribunal) but we don’t have a premises for it. It’s still in the process, including the appointment of the tribunal members. The names would need to be presented and approved first,” she told reporters yesterday.
The Anti-Sexual Harassment Act stipulates that the tribunal will include a president and a deputy who must have judicial experience.
There will also be a minimum of five other members who must also have judicial or legal experience.
Also launched at the event yesterday were the Anti-Sexual Harassment Advocacy Programme’s Implementation guidelines.
