Nurul Izzah denies rumour of contesting in Penang polls

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has denied rumours that she is returning to contest in the upcoming Penang state elections.

"I remain committed to my current responsibility as co-head of the secretariat of the advisory committee headed by Tan Sri Hassan Marican,” said Nurul Izzah, who also denied that she would be appointed to a key position should Pakatan Harapan return to power.

"I urge the media to be responsible in their reporting and not give credence to unsubstantiated claims," she said in a post on her Twitter account on Wednesday (May 31).

In the 15th General Election last November, Nurul failed to retain the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat, which was won by PAS candidate Muhammad Fawwaz Muhammad Jan with a 5,272-vote majority in a four-cornered contest.

Nurul Izzah, the eldest daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is currently the co-chairman of the secretariat to the Advisory Committee to the Finance Ministry (Acfin).

It is tasked with conducting engagements and providing advice to the Finance Minister under the direction of Tan Sri Hassan Marican, who is the chair of the advisory committee, as well as other members.

Acfin was established by Anwar on Feb 7, 2023, to advise him as Finance Minister.
