Stranded angler rescued

MELAKA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) rescued a British citizen who got stranded on Pulau Lalang, off the coast here, while on a fishing trip.

Melaka and Negri Sembilan MMEA director Maritime Capt Iskandar Ishak said the victim, identified as Russel Walter Boyd, 40, has lived in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, for the past eight months.

“He was found safe without any injury after being stranded on the island for about three hours,” he said in a statement.

Iskandar said before the incident, the victim went out alone for a fishing trip to the island before his rubber boat was swept away by strong currents.

“We received an alert from the Johor Baru Maritime Rescue Sub Centre through MERS 999 before deploying Bot Kilat 19, which was nearby, to look for and rescue the victim,” he said.

Islandar said the victim was then taken to the marine jetty at Bandar Hilir.

He advised the public to report any such incident to the Melaka and Negri Sembilan maritime operations centre at 06-387 6730 or the MERS 999 line for help.
