‘Up to the police to act against Kedah MB’

BUTTERWORTH: It will be left to the police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers to take any action against the Kedah Mentri Besar over his remarks that Penang belongs to Kedah, says Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said it was up to the police to investigate the statement made by Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

“They are free to investigate and the Attorney-General will then decide if there is a case to press charges under the law,” he told reporters after the pre-launch of the Madani Community in Seberang Prai here yesterday.

He was responding to a question on the action that could be taken against Muhammad Sanusi over the remarks.

Fahmi said he was aware that police reports had been lodged over Muhammad Sanusi’s statement.

“It is up to the police (to investigate).

“If we look carefully at the (Federal) Constitution, Penang is clearly called a state.

“It is clearly stated in the Constitution and one must comply with it.

“If there is anyone going against it, then the authorities will investigate and stop false information from being spread to the people,” he said.

Asked if the Sedition Act would be used in such situations, Fahmi said this would be left to the police.

“They are free to investigate under any Act which is in effect in the country.

“(It’s) up to them to decide which Act and subsequently it will be up to the Attorney-General to decide whether to press charges,” he said.

Muhammad Sanusi has come under a barrage of criticism recently over his remarks that Penang belongs to Kedah and that the Federal Constitution needs to be amended to accommodate findings made by historians and experts in Kedah.

Earlier, Fahmi launched the Madani Community, a voluntary body managed by the Information Department to foster good values among the people.

He said there would be 1,878 Madani communities in the country.

The Madani community will also help channel information and government initiatives to the grassroots.

Malaysia Madani is a policy framework and government slogan introduced and launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
