I never sought constitutional amendment for 'return' of Penang to Kedah, claims Sanusi

PETALING JAYA: Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor (pic) has denied asking for the Federal Constitution to be amended in order for Penang to be "returned" to Kedah.

In a press conference on Wednesday (June 7), he said he only issued a statement demanding that the lease paid by Penang to Kedah be increased.

He claimed he was misquoted by news portals which were then used to accuse him of violating the Constitution.

"They claimed that I violated the Constitution but how does asking for the lease rate to be increased amount to this?

"The recent debate about my statement in Parliament on Tuesday (May 6) should not have happened because it referred to the wrong quote.

"They quoted a portal and said I insisted on amending the Constitution so that Penang is returned to Kedah," he told reporters in a press conference on Wednesday (June 7).

Muhammad Sanusi, who is also PAS election director, said that government officials should have contacted him to confirm his statement before discussing it in Parliament.

On possible investigations into his statement, he added that he had relevant documents to prove his innocence.

He then produced one of the three letters he said he sent to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over his statement, which he said he had yet to receive a response to.

Muhammad Sanusi was reported to have said that Kedah and Penang do not have a border because Penang still belongs to Kedah, claiming further that Kedah only shares a border with Perak and Perlis.
