KUALA LUMPUR: The unity government coalition should be accepted with an open heart as Umno has a responsibility to ensure Malaysia's political, economic and social stability Malaysia, says Wanita chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.
“I know and I understand. It is difficult (to accept) because Umno and some of the parties in the government are long-time foes. But Malaysian politics today is different from what it was before. It is more dynamic and full of surprises," she added.
“We must accept this partnership because we have a role to play in this great nation,” said Noraini in her policy speech at the Wanita movement meeting on Thursday (June 8).
She added that as Umno is no longer the dominant party, it needs to reach a consensus and make compromises to ensure a win for the parties in the government.
She said when Barisan Nasional decided to work with other coalitions to form today’s government, many of its supporters, particularly Umno, were shocked, disappointed and worried about the party’s future.
“If we can set aside our personal differences for a while, we can see the good and positive side of this decision. For one, Umno can prove that we are a matured party that can adapt to any situation," said Noraini.
“We have also proven that we are not rigid and neither are we a racist party,” she added.
Noraini then said that Umno is not afraid to present dissenting views, and as partners in the administration, it would continue to give constructive views and criticism.
With elections for the six states looming, Noraini reminded her members that Umno needs to ensure a successful outing not just for Barisan Nasional but other parties in the government.
