KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth has called for the country to blacklist stand-up comedian Jocelyn Chia following her remarks on the ill-fated MH370 flight.
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said Chia’s statement made against the missing aircraft during her performance in the United States, was deemed insensitive towards the victims’ families.
“If you want to make a joke make sure it is based on facts and must be sensitive towards a topic because it could hurt the feelings of others.
“Make jokes courteously,” he told the media before handing over a memorandum to the United States Embassy at Jalan U-Thant here on Friday (June 9).
Dr Muhamad Akmal added that the memorandum has called for legal action to be taken against the comedian, who is a US citizen.
“This is something unacceptable for all Malaysians and I want to deliver a memorandum, carrying our messages to the US Embassy.
“With our memorandum today, hopefully it will give a stern warning to anyone who wants to make negative remarks about sensitive matters to all Malaysians,” he said.
Dr Muhamad Akmal was accompanied by 100 Umno and MCA Youth members who staged a peaceful demonstration outside the embassy.
MCA Youth chief Datuk Nicole Wong said the remarks by Chia were distasteful and had affected all Malaysians regardless of their race, religion or ethnicity.
“Even my children said her (Chia) jokes were wrong. We are here to stand up against anyone who is bullying us in any form,” she said.
Intan Maizura Othaman, the widow of a crew member on board MH370, has also slammed Chia for making such insensitive and tasteless jokes.
The Singaporean High Commissioner had also spoken out against Chia’s offensive comments and apologised for the incident while revealing that she is no longer a Singaporean.
On Friday (June 9), Chia displayed no signs of remorse after some of her social media accounts were allegedly suspended.
In her latest post, Chia tweeted: "Rumours had it that I either deleted my IG, or that I got 'cancelled' by IG.
"My account actually got suspended for 'impersonating a celebrity'. Answer: Jocelyn Chia (laughs emoji)."
