KUALA LUMPUR: Two outstanding Malaysian cadets have been accepted to continue their studies at prestigious service academies in the United States this year, adding to the eight Malaysians already undergoing training there.
The two cadets who competed with their global counterparts for admission into the academies are Ummi Annur Syahmina Sohaini and Muhammad Faidh Izzuddin Mat Sahari.
Ummi Annur Syahmina will enrol in the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs while Muhammad Faidh will attend the US Military Academy at West Point in New York.
US Ambassador to Malaysia Brian D. McFeeters, who presented the two with the offer letter at the embassy yesterday, said their admission to undergo training in the US showed the paramount progress of partnerships established between US and Malaysia.
“Our partnership on military and cybersecurity spheres is something that we’re very proud of.
“We want to create partnerships between Malaysian youth and American youth which is a technical plus.
“In my view, if you make a connection with somebody of this age, it could become a lifelong connection,” he said in his remarks.
The envoy also expressed his gratitude to the Malaysian army, the Royal Malaysian Navy, the Royal Malaysian Air Force and other Malaysian military agencies for their support and partnership in strengthening ties between service or military academies in both countries.
This year, 89 countries were invited to nominate candidates with the goal to enrol 15 foreign students in each of the service academies.
There are currently eight cadets from Malaysia in the US service academies, two at the US State Military Academy (West Point, New York), three at the US Naval Academy and three at the US Air Force Academy.
Both Ummi Annur Syahmina and Muhammad Faidh from this year’s batch will graduate from the respective academies in 2027. — Bernama
