Youth killed by falling tree in freak storm

Deadly damage: A vehicle lying pinned under a motorcyle and a fallen tree in George Town after the night storm.

GEORGE TOWN: An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed and nine others injured when they were crushed by a tree during a freak storm while travelling along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

Jalan Perak fire station chief A’azelan Hassan said three motorcycles and two cars were also damaged in the 1.26am incident yesterday.

“The deceased died on the spot. Nine others were injured including a pregnant woman,” he said.

A’azelan said some of the victims were stuck in their machines that had been pinned under the uprooted tree.

“We had to use special equipment to remove the victims.

“Two of them suffered broken legs and were sent to Hospital Penang for treatment,” he said.

The rest of the victims only received outpatient treatment, he added.

The incident had caused a traffic jam heading towards the Penang Bridge and Bayan Lepas.

Nearby residents also recorded a big waterspout which was believed to have happened around the same time.

The Penang Island City Council personnel were also present to help clear the debris from blocking road users after the incident.
