Floods: 25 evacuated after flash floods hit Iskandar Puteri

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A total of 25 people, including a baby, have been relocated to a temporary relief centre after their houses in Kampung Baru Muafakat, here were inundated by floodwaters.

Iskandar Puteri Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Mohd Khairi Zainuddin said the flash flood occurred at 12.12pm on Monday (June 12) due to continuous heavy rain.

“The village is one of the flood hotspots in the area, so it would usually be inundated during heavy rainfall.

“The water had risen to waist-deep when we arrived, but we managed to rescue 25 people from five families and move them to the temporary relief centre at Dewan Gelang Patah,” he said when contacted here on Monday (June 12).

The rescue operation is still ongoing even though the water has started to recede, he added.

Meanwhile, Kota Iskandar assemblyman Datuk Pandak Ahmad said besides the heavy rain, there is a need to deepen the Sungai Gelang Patah nearby to ensure that the village will not be affected by the floods each time it rains.

“We will discuss this matter with the Iskandar Puteri City Council and the Johor state government,” he added.
