Motion to debate nicotine poisoning of toddler slotted for Special Chambers on June 12

KUALA LUMPUR: The motion to debate the acute nicotine poisoning of a toddler in Bera, Pahang will be slotted for the Dewan Rakyat Special Chambers on Monday (June 12).

Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor said the motion filed by Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (PN-Tanjong Karang) to urgently debate the case, has fulfilled the three conditions.

“The Dewan Rakyat Speaker received a motion filed under Standing Order 18(1) from Tanjong Karang on Thursday (June 8).

“The motion has fulfilled all three conditions, namely definite, urgent and of public interest. Therefore, the Speaker allows for the matter to be referred to the Special Chambers at 2.30pm today,” he told the Lower House.

Earlier, Dr Zulkafperi said the motion should be debated in the Lower House urgently as the exemption of nicotine from the poisons list recently will cause the public to think that nicotine can be freely used without any harm or health repercussions.

“Removing nicotine from the Poisons Act will give the impression to the public that nicotine based products are free from harm and it will be widely marketed to everyone including children and pregnant women,” he told the Dewan Rakyat in his motion.

On June 5, the Health Ministry confirmed a case involving a toddler who was believed to have suffered acute nicotine poisoning at Bera, Pahang.

The girl who had no previous medical illnesses was found coughing, vomiting and experienced shortness of breath by her grandfather during the incident which occurred on May 30.

A disposable electronic cigarette device was also found lying on the floor near the child.
