Health Ministry raid Batu Pahat company for selling unregistered medical devices

BATU PAHAT: A company here was raided by the Health Ministry for selling unregistered medical devices to pharmacies and private clinics across the country.

Medical Device Authority (MDA) surveillance and operation unit chief Dery Akmal Abdul Rahman said that the operation was conducted at Taman Perindustrian Wawasan at 10am on Tuesday (June 13).

The company owner, a 40-year-old man, had been given a warning letter back in 2018 and 2022 but still continued to run his operations, he added.

"The first warning was issued in 2018 based on a public complaint as the owner was found selling two types of unregistered medical devices.

"Another complaint was lodged in July 2022, where we issued another warning to the company, this time for selling five types of unregistered medical devices," he said when met by reporters at the location.

The MDA had conducted six months of prior surveillance and investigations on the company before conducting the raid.

"We have also investigated all of the pharmacies and private clinics that bought the unregistered medical items from this company.

"The use of unregistered medical devices is dangerous, as we do not know the kind of risk that they pose to our health," he explained.

Some of the confiscated items include a face masks, pregnancy test kits, first aid kits, blood lancets, and paraffin gauze that were imported from China before being distributed to the local market.

The estimated value of the confiscated items has yet to be confirmed, and the case is being investigated under Section 5(1) of the Medical Device Act 2012 (Act 737) for selling an unregistered medical device.
