Health White Paper proposes incentives to promote healthy living

KUALA LUMPUR: Incentives are being proposed to promote pro-health lifestyles, the Health White Paper reads.

It said new programmes and approaches would be developed at the individual, industry and employer levels, adding that this includes the introduction of monetary and non-monetary incentives to encourage a healthy lifestyle among Malaysians.

The document proposed for incentives to be given to employers, companies, government agencies and ministries to carry out programmes promoting a healthy lifestyle among their staff.

It also proposed for incentives to be given to food businesses to improve their food contents as well as provide healthier food options.

The document also proposed for studies on the legal effectiveness of tax and disincentive initiatives.

"Taxes on sugary drinks, cigarettes, alcohol and other unhealthy products will be continued and further studied. A legislation will also be introduced to limit the sale of items known to be hazardous," the document read.

Healthcare providers, especially at the primary and community level, will also be incentivised to prepare effective promotive and preventive healthcare services, it proposed.

"These initiatives are currently being developed and at the conceptual stage," it read.
