KUCHING: The 1,285MW Baleh hydroelectric project in Kapit is on track to be operational by 2028, says Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said work on the project was currently progressing smoothly and according to schedule.

"There were some difficulties during the Covid-19 pandemic when work could not go on. We also had some problems with workers after the pandemic.

"But now it is back to normal and definitely on schedule," he told reporters after attending Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi's Gawai dinner here on Tuesday (June 13) night.

Construction on the Baleh dam, Sarawak Energy's largest hydropower project to date, began in 2018.

The concrete face rockfill dam is located on the Baleh River, about 105km upstream from its confluence with the Rajang River in Kapit division in central Sarawak.

Abang Johari also said the state government was currently conducting feasibility studies on the proposed 275MW Trusan dam in Lawas in northern Sarawak.

"We have made the decision that we will develop a hydropower dam in Trusan," he said.
