KUALA LUMPUR: The majority of cases under investigation by the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) were on citizenship issues in Sabah, the Dewan Rakyat has been told.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Ramkarpal Singh said Suhakam received some 5,440 complaints from 2015 to 2020.
"58% of the cases were successfully resolved with the remaining 42% are currently being investigated by Suhakam.
"The majority of the cases still being investigated are on citizenship issues in Sabah," he said during his winding-up speech on Wednesday (June 14) following debates on the Suhakam Annual Report 2020 in Parliament.
Ramkarpal was responding to Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) who raised the question in her earlier debate.
She also proposed for more Suhakam offices to be opened in states that bordered other countries.
Ramkarpal said the government welcomed the proposal to increase the public's access to Suhakam, which would allow it to provide better services.
"This suggestion, however, must be carefully studied as it involves a high operational cost," he said.
