Works Ministry to delegate minor infrastructure projects from JKR to other agencies, says Nanta Linggi

KUCHING: The Works Ministry will identify minor infrastructure projects that can be transferred from the Public Works Department (JKR) to other agencies for implementation, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (pic).

The Works Minister said this would ensure that the projects could be carried out by the implementing agencies without JKR's supervision.

"Once we have identified the projects, we will hand them over," he told reporters at a Gawai dinner hosted at his residence here on Tuesday (June 13) night.

Nanta was commenting on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement that minor infrastructure projects currently under JKR's supervision would be handed over to other departments or district offices.

Anwar said on Monday (June 12) that projects such as repairing dilapidated schools, clinics and toilets should no longer burden JKR as the department had a huge responsibility.

Nanta said a meeting would be held soon to come up with a list of projects to be transferred to other agencies.

"We also need to finetune the procedures in terms of the technical aspects.

"For example, if a project involves structure, the Works Ministry has to look at the safety aspect.

"This is because other departments might not have the same technical capabilities as JKR," he said.
