Malaysia urgently needs comprehensive cybersecurity laws, says PM


PUTRAJAYA: A cybersecurity bill needs to be drawn up without delay to ensure all aspects of the law are complete and in place, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said that with a law in place, the National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa) of the National Security Council would have clear powers to monitor and enforce laws pertaining to cybersecurity.

"There will be no compromise on national security. This includes the digital domain and the cyber ecosystem," he said in a statement on Thursday (June 15).

Anwar said Nacsa had been tasked as the lead agency to mobilise efforts across various government entities and industries while entities in the cyber ecosystem would continue with their existing powers to continue their functions and roles.

"At the same time, functions of several other agencies related to cybersecurity will be streamlined to avoid overlapping functions and to maximise efficiency," he said.

The Prime Minister said with the different challenges presented in the digital era, the government machinery must be better prepared to handle cyberthreats.
