SEREMBAN: The decision to redevelop the Seremban railway station by retaining its facade is the best move to preserve its history and heritage, says Malaysian History Association Negri Sembilan Branch honorary secretary Datuk Sudin Kamari.
He said this is because the station is one of the oldest in the country and left a historic mark that needs to be preserved while the state is being developed.
“We want development, but at the same time, not touching part of the structure that has value as it was built around the 1880s for the transportation of tin at that time.“Of course, we want the community, especially young people, to remember the history of that development,” he told Bernama.
Yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, while attending the Seremban Sentral Residence Key Handover Ceremony, was reported as saying that the government plans to redevelop the station without affecting its facade as it is a heritage building.
Apart from that, Loke said that Railway Asset Corporation (RAC) is currently renovating the station, including the parking lot, for RM8.3mil. It is expected to be completed on Jan 7, 2025.
The station, which also offers commuter services to the Klang Valley, still maintains its simple original construction and attracts tourists, especially those looking for heritage elements.
The station’s railway track was first built by the administration of Sg Ujong on Sept 12, 1887, and was the most important way to move tin, coffee and agricultural produce at that time.
