KUALA LUMPUR: A drug syndicate headed by an Iranian has been busted with the seizure of drugs with a street value of RM3.7mil.
A 48-year-old Iranian man, believed to be the mastermind, and a 39-year-old local man were detained following raids in Taman Segambut Aman and Jalan Ampang on Tuesday.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the first raid was conducted at a condominium parking lot in Taman Segambut Aman at about 6pm on Tuesday.
“We seized 4.2kg of syabu from a minivan and detained the local man.
“He tested positive for methamphetamine but has no criminal record,” he said at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters yesterday.
The first arrest led police to the Iranian suspect at a condominium unit along Jalan Ampang, he said.
“We seized 103kg of syabu and 34.7kg of ganja. The suspect has no criminal record and tested negative for drugs.
“We believe the syndicate has been active since May last year.
“They catered for the market in the Klang Valley and received supplies from a neighbouring country,” said Comm Mohd Shuhaily, adding that the local man was the runner for the Iranian mastermind.
“We believe the Iranian suspect has been actively trafficking drugs in Iran since 2014. He has entered and left Malaysia several times since 2014 while posing as an engineer.
“He left for Iran three months ago and returned to Malaysia last month,” he said.
Both suspects have been remanded for seven days until June 20.
“The drugs seized could have been supplied to 1.47 million drug users,” said Comm Mohd Shuhaily, who urged the public to continue supplying information on criminal activities.
“We urge those with information to contact the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department’s 24-hour hotline by WhatsApp at 012-2087222,” he said.
