Durian, durian everywhere ... even in ramen

A RESTAURANT in Taiwan has taken the durian craze to the next level by offering durian ramen (Japanese noodles), China Press reported.

The noodles are served in a hollowed-out durian husk while its broth includes the fruit itself.

Restaurant owner Sun Bo En said he and his wife are durian lovers, and he got the inspiration after trying a durian ramen dish at a Malaysian restaurant.

Sun said he blended durian pulp and mixed it with a coconut milk katsu broth.

The coconut milk, he said, was the “bridge” between the meat and durian flavours.

Chestnut, radish, apples, potatoes and lemongrass are added to the dish to enrich its flavour. The soup is paired with springy ramen, half-boiled egg, bamboo shoots and, driving it in, fresh durian pulp.

The restaurant only sells 20 bowls of durian ramen per day.

Sun said the process of making the noodles was not easy. Hollowing out the durian husk is a tiring and painstaking job, and he has to ensure the durian husk won’t break.

> Cleaning staff at a hotel in Port Dickson had a ghastly shock when they found a human-like figure on one of the hotel’s beds.

It turned out that it was actually a prank by some guests, China Press reported.

The hotel’s general manager, Zhang Zhi Guang, told the paper that the guests in one of the rooms had created a human body using pillows, blankets and white bedsheets. It had a head, hands and legs.

Zhang said he had seen all kinds of behaviour from hotel guests. Some would clean up their rooms and even take out the trash, but there are those who will leave a mess after a party. Some rooms even had broken glass while instant noodles were put into the kettles.

> Sixty-one-year-old singer Jacky Cheung (pic) surprised everyone at his concert in Macau when he performed a leg split on stage, Sin Chew Daily reported.

During the concert on Sunday, he spoke about ageing and advised his audience to exercise and stay healthy.

He then performed the leg split, much to the audience’s surprise and delight. The act was caught on video which went viral and attracted many comments.

“How is this 61 years old? I can’t even do it at 31,” one user commented, while another said: “Even after singing, he can still perform a full split.”

The paper said his full split performance was a tribute to actress Lydia Shum, who became his godmother after they acted together in the TV show Mother vs Mother.

Lydia had her own iconic full split performance, and in memory of her, he practised and did a full leg split in a concert in 2011, and did the same in subsequent concerts.
