Bersatu questions if Kit Siang supports use of Sedition Act

PETALING JAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has questioned if DAP stalwart Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang supports the use of the Sedition Act.

Its legal and constitution bureau deputy head Sasha Lyna Abdul Latif said police have hauled up the Srikandi Muda Penang information head for reposting a post critical of Lim on her social media account.

She said the information head was seven months pregnant and is currently being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948 and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Sasha Lyna claimed Bukit Aman officers had gone to Penang and were given instructions to detain and remand her for a few days.

"This is clearly an act of hypocrisy being practised by the current Pakatan-led government as for the whole time when it was the Opposition, the then government would be criticised on the use of the Sedition Act against the Opposition," she said in a statement on Saturday (June 17).

"When the Pakatan government was in power in 2018, DAP's deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo called for the law to be abolished as it was subject to abuse and has been used to stifle political dissent.”

Sasha Lyna said Lim had also written in his personal blog in 2015 saying why do we still need the Sedition Act.

"Now the Sedition Act is being used to defend Lim himself and he remains silent about it.

"Has the position changed now that Pakatan is in power and in the government and using the Sedition Act against Opposition leaders, party members and supporters?" she asked.
