Malaysian film project “All About Yuyu” bags the Most Creative Project honour at the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival’s Film Project Venture (SIFF Project) recently.
Malaysian director Tan Chui Mui (pic) will be directing the film project and it is produced by notable local filmmaker Woo Ming Jin.
The film, which will be co-produced by both China and Malaysia, would be Tan’s first attempt at directing wuxia (martial arts) and youth genre films.
"I always enjoy taking on new challenges. This time, I want to make a modern wuxia
film to recapture the magical feeling I had when watching films during my childhood,” Tan said.
All About Yuyu stood out from 33 other films listed in the SIFF project.
China’s producer of the film project Annie Song said she had anticipated that the film would win the honour for its creative storytelling.
"Before the award was announced, I already had a strong feeling that this project would win.
“The story idea is very innovative, smartly blending contemporary wuxia and youth elements together, which is a genre rarely seen in the market.
"This film will be a China-Malaysia co-production and is planned to be shot in Malaysia. From the early stages of its creation, it already targets the Asian market.
"During the meetings in the project market, all investors in China have showed great interest
in the project, recognising its high commercial potential," Song added.
Tan had directed three films previously, including the award-winning Barbarian Invasion.
According to the festival’s website, the SIFF project serves as both an incubator for excellent film works and a key platform for the industry to discover new talents in Chinese-language cinema.
