Wan Junaidi to be sworn in as Dewan Negara president on June 19

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has confirmed that he will be sworn in as the Dewan Negara president on Monday (June 19).

The former Santubong MP said that his nomination was made by the Prime Minister's Department to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah three days ago and had received approval.

"There was no other nomination because I was the only candidate from the government. I went to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (June 17) to meet the parliamentary secretary.

"I also had a meeting last night to ensure that the arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony were done perfectly in accordance with the law and the constitution," he said on Sunday (June 19), as reported by Sarawak state broadcast channel TVS.

Wan Junaidi is replacing Tan Sri Rais Yatim whose tenure ended on Thursday (June 15).

He had held several key Cabinet posts under previous administrations including Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker from 2008 until 2013.

He was also Batang Lupar MP from 1990 till 2004.

Wan Junaidi subsequently won the Santubong parliamentary seat in the 2008 general election and was its MP until 2022.

He did not contest in the 15th General Election.
