KUALA LUMPUR: The Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture and Tourism Organisation (GCTO) of Korea and Apple Vacations recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote the quality and value of tourism for both parties.

The MoU event was held at Wisma Apple here.

The MOU was signed by GCTO president, Kim Seong Jo and Apple Vacations Group managing director, Datuk Seri Koh Yock Heng.

Apple Vacations is also officially appointed as the preferred travel agent of Malaysia by the GCTO of Korea.

Both parties hope to work closely and strengthen cooperation in the future to provide more quality tour packages to Malaysian tourists.

Gyeongsangbuk-do, located in southeastern Korea, is blessed with beautiful natural scenery. It has a rich history with many relics and is also known as a thousand-year-old capital because it was the capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom.

To this day, Gyeongsangbuk-do still retains its sparkling history from a thousand years ago and is a representative of Korea's traditional culture.

In addition, Buddhism influenced the Silla Dynasty and led to the country being ruled by it. The classical Buddhist monuments that have been preserved to this day are outstanding.

Furthermore, the ancient city of Gyeongju brings a unique flavour in autumn, with a rich historical atmosphere and red and yellow maple leaves everywhere. This is why Gyeongju is one of the major tourist cities in Korea today.

Specially recommended tourist attractions and activities:

> Bulguksa temple

Built in 530 A.D., the temple houses many national treasures, among which the representative ones are the Seokgatap (Pagoda of Sakyamuni) and Dabotap (Pagoda of Bountiful Treasures) in front of the Daeungjeon (the Hall of Great Enlightenment).

The temple and Seokguram Grotto were selected as a World Heritage Site on Dec 6, 1995, along with Haeinsa Temple Tripitaka Koreana Woodblocks and Jongmyo. They are well-known internationally.

> Seokguram Grotto

The construction of Seokguram Grotto was completed in 774 A.D. and took 24 years in total.

The statues are exquisitely carved in deep and shallow relief and are considered masterpieces of Buddhist art in the Far East.
