KUALA LUMPUR: A food delivery rider has been sentenced to 40 months' jail and two strokes of the cane for robbing two convenience stores here with a parang.
Muhammad Syahir Muhammad Jali, 32, was charged with two counts of robbing the convenience stores in the city earlier this year.
He was first charged with robbing a convenience store on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah of 33 packs of cigarettes worth RM558.90 along with RM150.75 cash as well as threatening cashier Dhanaletchmi Raju on April 8.
He was also charged with a similar crime at a convenience store on Jalan Taman Melati from which he stole packs of cigarettes, food and drinks worth RM5,459.06 after threatening cashier Jegatiswaran Muniandy on April 9.
The charges were framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery which carries a maximum punishment of up to 14 years’ imprisonment along with either a fine or whipping.
Both charges were also framed under Section 397 for using a deadly weapon to attempt to cause harm or death in a robbery which carried a sentence of whipping or any other punishment within its provisions as the court deemed fit.
A handcuffed Muhammad Syahir pleaded guilty to both charges before Sessions Court judge Izralizam Sanusi here on Tuesday (June 20).
Deputy public prosecutor Roslizi Sulaiman then asked the court to impose a punishment that fit the crime.
"Let the punishment be a lesson to the accused, especially in light of the growing number of robberies across the country recently," he said.
Muhammad Syahir, who was unrepresented, then pleaded for a lighter sentence, stating that he had to care for his elderly parents who needed to undergo dialysis frequently.
Izralizam then imposed the sentence and reminded Muhammad Syahir that he would face a heavier punishment if he repeated the crime, which the accused then acknowledged.
