Education Minister denies SPM passing marks lowered

KUALA LUMPUR: Allegations that the passing marks for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination were lowered are untrue, says Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

She said the ministry has standards that have always been maintained.

“We have to follow the standards and merits that have been used when grading the exams,” she told reporters after the Strengthening Malay Language Programme for Chinese and Tamil Schools in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor here on Tuesday (June 20).

Fadhlina also said the ministry will take action or carry out interventions if necessary upon receiving an official complaint.

More so, she added, if the complaint affects the integrity and ethos of teachers.

She was responding to a question about a private school teacher who posted herself performing a spot check on her student’s bag on her personal social media.

The teacher had come under fire for her post, which has now been deleted.

Fadhlina also said she will support any programmes meant to strengthen Bahasa Melayu usage among teachers and students.
