INTERACTIVE: When will the six states go to the polls? Guess the date in our poll!

PETALING JAYA: The guessing game on when the election in six states will be held is heating up.

Five states have so far announced dissolution - Kelantan on June 22, Selangor on June 23, Kedah and Penang on June 28 and Negri Sembilan on June 30.

Terengganu is expected to follow suit soon.

An election must be held within 60 days of dissolution, and the next step will be for the Election Commission (EC) to meet and decide on the dates for nomination and polling.

The EC had said the six states should hold the polls simultaneously, and parties and coalitions from both sides of the divide have agreed to hold the elections for all six states simultaneously.

Since Kelantan was the first to trigger a dissolution on June 22, a simultaneous election for the six states means that it would need to be held no later than Aug 21, which is 60 days from the date Kelantan dissolved its assembly.

As we wait for the EC to announce the dates, why not try your luck by guessing when you think polling day will be held in our interactive poll.

Don’t worry, we’ll help you out by providing some background information on previous state elections and elections to give you an idea of when polling is usually held after a state assembly is dissolved.

The following are some of the events taking place in the weeks and months ahead, which may affect the date of the election in the states:

When did the states and regions last hold an election?

In the run-up to the 15th General Election (GE15) on Nov 19 last year, Parliament along with the state governments of Pahang, Perak and Perlis were dissolved.

Sabah, Melaka, Sarawak and Johor had conducted their own state polls in the two years prior to GE15.

The leaves the six remaining states which need to hold state polls soon as the five-year terms of their legislative assemblies are about to expire.

Weekend or weekday polling?

Malaysia’s states and regions last held their elections on either a Wednesday or Saturday.

The six states that last held a state election at the 14th general election (GE14) in 2018 conducted polling on a Wednesday.

All others last held their state polls on a Saturday.
