Dr M, Erdogan to collaborate on Istanbul Summit

PETALING JAYA: Turkiye president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad have agreed to hold the Istanbul Summit Conference in September or October this year.

This was agreed upon during a one-hour meeting at the Presidential Complex in Ankara where the discussion focused on the KL Summit Conference, which was held in 2019.

Erdogan also suggested that Dr Mahathir and his KL Summit Conference team work with Turkiye on the upcoming Istanbul Summit Conference.

"The conference is to further look into the potentials which were identified and to continue with it in the Istanbul Summit Conference," Dr Mahathir said in a Facebook post on Thursday (June 22).

"The rapid development of Turkiye in various fields can be an example to other Islamic nations.”

The KL Summit Conference in 2019 headed by Dr Mahathir as the chairman was held for four days at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre attended by 450 representatives from 56 countries consisting of leaders of nations, scholars, politicians and community leaders.

Dr Mahathir also took the opportunity to congratulate Erdogan on retaining his presidency in the recent elections.

He also conveyed his condolences to victims of the earthquake which destroyed several territories and killed thousands of people.

"There were also other discussions on the plight of Muslims and the need to help them to face difficulties and war," added Dr Mahathir.
