Loke not running for a Penang seat in state polls, says CM

GEORGE TOWN: DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke will not be running for a Penang seat in the coming state polls, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The Penang DAP chairman said the speculation was like thinking that he would be contesting a Negri Sembilan seat.

“If the media reported that Chow Kon Yeow will contest in Seremban, people who read it will laugh in disbelief; as such it has a duty to assess and decide if certain speculation is worth publishing,” said Chow.

He said this at a press conference at his office in Komtar on Thursday (June 22).

Chow was responding to questions on speculation that Loke would be a candidate in Penang in the upcoming state assembly elections.

Penang and Negri Sembilan are among six states holding elections this year along with Selangor, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu.

A local newspaper had quoted unnamed DAP insiders who had rubbished claims that Loke would replace Chow as the ruling party’s chief minister candidate if it won the state election.

Chow previously announced that the Penang state legislative assembly will dissolve on June 28 with the governor’s consent to pave the way for state elections that are expected to be held in August.
