PAS to contest lion’s share of state seats for Perikatan

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS will lead the charge for Perikatan Nasional in the upcoming state polls and contest the lion’s share of 245 constituencies that will be up for grabs.

Perikatan will also continue to use the PAS white moon logo in Kelantan and Terengganu, said coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He added that the remaining four states – Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang and Kedah – will use the coalition’s blue flag during the state elections.

“Kelantan and Terengganu will continue to use the PAS logo unless the PAS leadership changes their minds and wants to use Perikatan’s logo instead,” he said in jest at a press conference at the coalition’s headquarters yesterday.

In the 15th General Election (GE15) last November, Perikatan candidates contested under the PAS moon logo in Kelantan and Terengganu.

At the press conference, Muhyiddin also announced the distribution of 245 state seats between the coalition’s three parties.

The bulk of the state seats will be contested by PAS at 126 while 83 was allocated to Bersatu and 36 to Gerakan.

Perikatan will contest 36 seats in Kedah followed by 45 seats in Kelantan, 32 in Terengganu, 40 in Penang, 56 in Selangor and 36 in Negri Sembilan.

Of the 245 candidates, 64 from Bersatu, 50 from PAS and 36 from Gerakan are contesting seats where the coalition is not the incumbent.

Also present at the press conference were PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau.

“The seat negotiations went smoothly. There were no disagreements that could have led to us having issues,” said Muhyiddin.

“We were able to finalise the seat distribution ahead of the Election Commission’s announcement on the polling dates,” he added.

Muhyiddin said the names of all the coalition’s candidates will be announced at a later date in their respective states.
