GEORGE TOWN: You can choose either squid, chicken, fish or salted fish with your nasi lemak. On top of this, there are the usual crispy anchovies, cucumbers, peanuts, and boiled egg. All that for just RM1.50.

Despite such a low price, trader Nurul Lina Hanif said she could still turn in a small profit, provided she sold about 500 packets each day, a target which she could hit on weekdays.

“During weekends, the number can reach 700 packets,” said Nurul Lina, 37.

She has been selling this Malaysian all-time favourite breakfast at an affordable price for some time.

“I started selling for RM1 per pack six years ago, but I had to increase the price gradually to RM1.20, and later RM1.50 since last month.

“My customers have no complaints at all because they know things are getting expensive these days.

“It is hard to get a packet of nasi lemak for RM1.50 now,” she said.

Residents, workers and students in the area would patronise her stall, she said.

Nural Lina and her husband Khurram Bahsir, 35, run the makeshift stall near Masjid Telaga Air in Butterworth on the mainland from 6.30am to 10.30am daily except Sundays.

“My dream is to own a proper nasi lemak shop.

“I believe we can do that soon,” she said.
