SEREMBAN: Barisan Nasional needs not be bothered by the "corrupt" remarks, made against the coalition by Tony Pua.

Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had also advised the coalition leadership not to respond to it.

"It is pointless to respond to such statements as doing so will only give credence to what has been said," he said when asked to comment on the former Damansara MP's remarks recently.

The ex-DAP leader had, in his speech, taken a swipe at the party's partner in the unity government (Umno and Barisan Nasional), calling them "corrupt".

"Whatever said is not the official stand of the (DAP) leadership," Ahmad Zahid told reporters after meeting the Negri Sembilan Umno leadership and election workers.

He thanked DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke for not endorsing Pua's statement and saying it was not the party's stand.

Separately, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, said the Pakatan-Barisan presidential council would decide soon on Negri Sembilan Barisan's request to contest two more seats in the coming state polls.

"Ideally, it should remain status quo but if this request can be considered, we will be happy as our election machinery is ready to go all out to ensure victory," he added.

Negri Umno chief Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias had on several occasions expressed hope for Barisan to contest 18 seats although the party won only 16 in the previous polls.

This, he said, was to allow both Pakatan and Barisan to face the polls on an equal footing.
