Be careful when coming out with statements, unity govt members told

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The coalition partners in the unity government should be careful when coming out with statements that could lead to provocations, says Umno Youth deputy chief Mohd Hairi Mad Shah.

The Umno supreme council member said the unity government was formed based on the advice of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and the Malay Rulers, and this should always be respected by all coalition members.

"There are times when politicians might come up on stage for a speech and forget that Umno is also part of the unity government that supports a Prime Minister from Pakatan Harapan.

"Everything that has happened in the past should be left in the past, and what we should focus on right now is to move forward and improve our economy.

"Let’s focus on doing the right things for the rakyat first and talk politics again in the next general election," he said when met by reporters after the state Cooperatives Commission of Malaysia (SKM) grant handing over ceremony at Amansari Hotel here on Monday (June 26).

Mohd Hairi said this when asked to comment on former Damansara MP Tony Pua's speech at a recent DAP event for calling Umno and Barisan Nasional "corrupt".

"His statements have made everyone in the unity government unhappy, and I hope that he will stop making such statements in the future.

"If he (Pua) misses being the Opposition or a spokesman for negativity, I think Perikatan Nasional is more than happy to welcome him.

"He can choose whether to apply for a position in Gerakan or Bersatu," he said.

During a DAP fundraising dinner on Friday (June 23), Pua reportedly took a swipe at Pakatan’s allies within the unity government, and called Umno and Barisan "corrupt".
