Nadma: Water disruptions expected across five states due to hot, dry weather

PETALING JAYA: Several districts across five states are expected to experience water supply distribution due to the current hot and dry weather situation, says the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma).

Affected districts include Sik, Baling and Kulim in Kedah; Seberang Perai Utara in Penang; Alor Gajah and Melaka Tengah in Melaka; Kuala Krai, Gua Musang, Machang, Kota Bharu, Tanah Merah and Pasir Mas in Kelantan; and Bintulu in Sarawak, were all expected to experience water supply distributions, according to the agency.

Nadma also warned that the water level at Kedah’s Sungai Muda dam continued to fall below critical levels with the current level standing at 30.48% compared with 32.87% in the previous week.

It also noted that water levels in four other dams - the Timah Tasoh, Malut, Teluk Bahang and Sembrong Barat dams in Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Johor, respectively - had fallen to alarming levels of between 41% and 50%.

A level 1 heatwave would also continue to persist in the districts of Jempol in Negri Sembilan, Kuala Krai in Kelantan, Rompin in Pahang, and Betong in Sarawak.

Fortunately, no hot-weather related deaths occurred over the past week despite recorded illnesses due to the hot weather increasing to 53 from June 19 to June 25 compared to 44 recorded in the previous week.

"Of the 53 cases, five were due to heat stroke, 29 from heat exhaustion and 19 were heat cramps.

"This leaves only one death so far due to heat stroke, which was reported on April 25," the agency said in a statement Monday (June 26).
