Insp Sheila claims trial to public outbursts charges

KUALA LUMPUR: The police officer seen in recent videos over her loud outbursts has claimed trial to three charges of criminal intimidation and insulting the modesty of a man and a police officer.

Insp Sheila Sharon Steven Kumar, an investigating officer at Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department, pleaded not guilty to two charges before magistrate Chai Guan Hock and one charge before magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni at the Selayang Magistrate’s Courts yesterday.

In the first court, the 35-year-old inspector was charged with making criminal threats to a 69-year-old woman at a shoplot in Taman Sri Gombak, Selangor, at around noon on June 15, under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, she faces a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Insp Sheila was also charged with insulting the modesty of a 41-year-old man by calling him “fat, bald and looking like a rhinoceros” an hour later at the same location on the same day, under Section 509 of the Code.

It provides for a jail term of up to five years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Nur Iman Wan Ahmad Afzal requested bail at RM8,000.

Insp Sheila’s lawyer Manoharan Malayalam asked the court to issue a bond on the accused instead, on account that she is “a serving police officer who has a clean background and has always put her career first”.

Chai fixed bail at RM3,000.

In the second court, Insp Sheila faced her third charge of intimidating a police officer with a lance corporal rank with intent to insult his modesty at around 1.25pm at the same location on the same day as the previous charges.

The charge was framed under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to five years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

DPP Anis Farhan Ahmad Hilmi proposed RM5,000 bail in one surety.

Manoharan then pleaded before Nur Hafizah to tie the bail with the cases in Chai’s court.

Nur Hafizah fixed bail at RM2,000 bail.

Both magistrates fixed Aug 7 for mention of the cases.

When met after the court proceedings, Manoharan said there were initially a total of six charges against Insp Sheila but three were dropped.

Insp Sheila landed in hot water earlier this month when a viral video emerged showing her arguing with other police personnel and civilians.

She was detained by the Gombak police on June 18 and subsequently released on police bail.

Later yesterday, Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad issued a statement to say that Insp Sheila has been suspended from her duties pending legal procedures against her.
