IPOH: There has been an over 200% increase in the number of dengue cases reported in Ipoh, says mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.
He said that 681 cases were reported from January to June 17, and added that there were 210 cases in the same period last year.
"There is an uncontrolled epidemic in the Kg Baru Gunung Rapat area, where four cases were reported," said Rumaizi.
He then said that there are eight other localities in the city that have several ongoing cases, but added that they are under control.
“The highest is Taman Ipoh Jaya with five cases, followed by Taman Che Wan, Taman Klebang Jaya, Seri Palma, and Kg Tersusun Tawas Tambahan with three cases respectively,” he told reporters after the meeting at the MBI headquarters on Tuesday (June 27).
Kg Rapat Jaya Tambahan, Bandar Baru Sri Klebang, and Kg Pengkalan Pegoh have reported two cases each.
Rumaizi said to curb the dengue problem, the council will be conducting more on-the-ground programmes.
“Until June 17, our officers and personnel have conducted a total of 351 dengue inspections involving over 20,000 premises and residential areas. From the inspection, we have issued 65 compound notices worth RM32,500," said Rumaizi.
He added that 30 cases had to be referred to the courts as the owners of the premises failed to pay the compounds issued.
“We encourage the public to do more cleaning to ensure that there is no place for Aedes mosquitos to breed. We hope the public knows that the fight against dengue is a joint effort and they can participate in reducing the area for Aedes mosquito breeding," he said.
