GEORGE TOWN: The Penang State Assembly will dissolve on Wednesday (June 28), says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow (pic).
He said this after an audience with Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak at Seri Mutiara here.
"This morning, I received the governor's consent to dissolve the state legislative assembly effective tomorrow," he told reporters waiting for him at the gate of the Governor's residence.
He said that he feels relieved at having the consent of the Governor, and adds that he can now look forward to preparing for the state polls.
Chow spent about 30 minutes at Seri Mutiara to get the proclamation of dissolution signed by Penang's Head of State, which says will pave the way for the state election - expected to be held in early August.
Chow arrived at the governor's residence gates at 7:53am in his official car, and this comes after Chow said on Monday (June 26) that he will be meeting the Head of State to seek consent to dissolve the state legislative assembly.
On June 8, Chow had announced the likely date for dissolution of the Assembly.
Six states – Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Negri Sembilan – did not dissolve their state assemblies before the 15th General Election on Nov 19 last year.
Kelantan, Selangor and Kedah have officially announced the dissolution of their respective state assemblies on June 22, 23 and 28 respectively to pave the way for the elections.
In the 2008 and 2013 elections, the then-Pakatan Rakyat captured 29 and 30 seats respectively to form the state government.
In 2018, Pakatan - then combined with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia - won 37 seats, leaving Umno with two seats and PAS with one.
DAP won 19 seats, followed by PKR with 14 and two each for Amanah and Bersatu.
