‘No one was kidnapped in viral video’

BUTTERWORTH: The footage in a viral video of a woman trying to stop a luxury multi-purpose vehicle from “driving off” with her husband inside actually took place over a private matter, say police.

South Seberang Prai OCPD Supt Ng Ah Thiam clarified that it was not a kidnapping attempt but a private issue.

“A few men had gone to see the man who owed them money.

“They took him into their MPV for a discussion.

“When he entered the car, the doors locked. Seeing this, the wife thought it was a kidnapping.

“So, there was a commotion to stop the car but the men had no intention of kidnapping the woman’s husband.

“The husband and the others then got out of the vehicle,” he said.

While the wife had lodged a police report, she withdrew it the next day, according to Supt Ng.

“He owed them money and they have apparently settled the issue. The investigating officer took their statements to make sure,” he said.

During a 29-second video of the incident that was said to have happened on Monday, the wife was seen blocking the MPV with her bare hands and screaming.

The incident was said to have happened at a village in Nibong Tebal.
