Teen fisherman dies at sea after being struck by lightning

GELANG PATAH: A teenage boy died after being struck by lightning while fishing with his father in waters off Pulau Merambong at 8.15am on Friday (June 30).

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm Rahmat Ariffin said the boy and his father were gathering nets they had left out the night before to catch crabs.

“The 17-year-old victim was thrown into the sea when lightning struck the boat," he said in a statement.

ACP Rahmat said the victim’s 60-year-old father managed to pull his son out of the water as other nearby fishermen rushed to their aid.

He said the victim, from Kampung Ladang near here, was pronounced dead by an assistant medical officer from Hospital Sultanah Aminah.

ACP Rahmat said the case had been classified as sudden death.

Pulau Merambong, formerly known as Pulo Ulor, is an uninhabited island in the Straits of Johor and is surrounded by mangrove swamp.

The island is next to the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Gelang Patah and just one kilometre off the coast from Tuas, Singapore.
