Two cops plead not guilty to assault


KOTA KINABALU: Two policemen have claimed trial at a Magistrate's Court here to physically assaulting two people in separate incidents.

Kpl Rizal Lee Abdullah and Sjn Fredy Francis pleaded not guilty to their respective charges before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun on Friday (June 30).

Rizal Lee, 34, and Francis, 32, were both charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

They face a maximum one-year jail sentence or fine of up to RM2,000, or both, on conviction.

Rizal Lee was charged with causing injury to a 45-year-old man at the Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) staff parking lot at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) here at 8.15pm on Oct 6 last year.

Francis, a Sarawakian, was accused of assaulting a 22-year-old woman in front of a bar at the popular seaside Waterfront area here at 11.50pm on Jan 23.

The case management for both cases has been fixed for Aug 3.

Rizal Lee was granted bail of RM1,500 while Francis was released on a bail of RM1,000, both with two local sureties.

Both accused were also ordered to report to the nearest police station once a week pending case disposal.

Deputy public prosecutor Bryan Francis appeared for the prosecution while the two policemen were unrepresented.
