SEGAMAT: About 30 students at SMK Seri Kenangan here were forced to evacuate its hostel block when a fire broke out in the middle of the night.

Johor education, information and communication committee chairman Norlizah Noh said the fire raged from 1.45am and 3am on Sunday (July 2).

"The Fire and Rescue Department managed to tame the flames at around 3.45am to avoid the building from further damage.

"However, a large portion of the boys' hostel was burnt, and the blaze also destroyed equipment and the students' personal belongings such as school uniforms.

"Thankfully, nobody was hurt," she said in a statement after visiting the school.

She said that affected students have been temporarily placed at the school's surau block.

Norlizah added that the school has contacted the students' parents and guardians and they were also allowed to return home.

"To ease the burden of the students involved, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has agreed to give each of them two pairs of school uniforms and financial aid of RM100," she said.

She added that the Segamat Education office and the Johor Education Department would be estimating losses while waiting for the Fire and Rescue Department to determine the cause of the fire.
