Sabah cinema industry gets a boost with 10Star Cinemas’ expansion plans

KOTA KINABALU: More job opportunities will be provided following 10Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd’s expansion plans in Sabah, says state Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.

10Star Cinemas - a subsidiary of Melewar Industrial Group Bhd - aims to be the biggest cinema chain in Sabah with three new cinema locations added to its portfolio.

The new premises in Tawau, Kota Marudu and Benoni, Papar, are expected to be ready by the end of this year.

This was revealed during a courtesy call by the company’s management on Masidi here.

10Star Cinemas currently has three locations operating in Tawau (one) and Sandakan (two) districts.

Following the briefing by 10Star Cinemas chief executive officer Onn Norshal Hamzah on the expansion plans, Masidi anticipated the move would not only provide another means of entertainment to the community, but also create job opportunities and training in the cinema industry.

“I hope that the expansion will motivate Sabah's film industry players to produce high-quality films,” added Masidi in a statement.

The courtesy call at Masidi’s office in Menara Kinabalu was led by Melewar Industrial executive chairman Tunku Datuk Yaacob Khyra.

During the meeting, Tunku Yaacob also informed the minister about the Group's other ventures including the opening of an international secondary school in the state capital by January next year.
